Fifteen preferred and advisor programs, from Four Seasons to Virtuoso

Luxury hotel programs, booked through The Plane Prince Travel.

How it works

The same rate, with more of the hotel.

Most luxury hotel groups reserve their best guest benefits for bookings made through approved advisors. You pay the hotel's own best available rate, and the stay can add upgrade priority, daily breakfast, a property credit, and flexible arrival, depending on the program and property. Hotel-only bookings carry no planning fee. Where a hotel has its own program, I book through it; Virtuoso covers many of the rest. More on booking a luxury hotel through an advisor.

Side by side

Fifteen programs, compared.

The same five questions for every program: breakfast, the property credit, the upgrade, early check-in or late check-out, and what happens to your points. Each program name opens its own page, with the detail and the fine print.

Each row is taken from that program's own page. “Not listed” means the page names no such benefit. Benefits vary by property and rate, upgrades and flexible timing are subject to availability, and exactly what applies is confirmed in writing before you book.

How to choose

Start with the hotel, then the program.

Most stays have one right answer: the program the hotel itself belongs to. When you are choosing between hotels, these are the differences that usually decide it. Not sure which fits? Send the hotel or the destination through Start Here, and I will match it to the right program.

A hotel with its own program

Where a hotel group runs its own program, I book through it, because it typically ranks higher for upgrades than Virtuoso. Virtuoso covers luxury hotels without one, including Aman, Auberge, Capella, Cheval Blanc, and One&Only.

The room settled before you land

Peninsula PenClub and Shangri-La Luxury Circle confirm the upgrade at booking, Rosewood Elite does in Asia and Europe, and Hyatt Privé confirms it within 24 hours of booking, where available.

Points and status

Hilton For Luxury earns double Honors base points, and Accor, Anantara, Hyatt, IHG, Jumeirah, Marriott, and Shangri-La stays keep your points and status. At Mandarin Oriental, The Peninsula, and Rosewood there are no points to give up.

Suites, villas, and long days

Rosewood Elite's credit scales up to $1,000 on multi-bedroom villas and residences, and Belmond's rises to $220 per suite. For early flights and late departures, Peninsula Time runs from 6am check-in to 10pm check-out.

Head to head

Mandarin Oriental Fan Club vs Peninsula PenClub.

Both programs cover their brand's hotels worldwide, and both include daily breakfast and a property credit. PenClub leads with certainty: the upgrade is confirmed when the booking is made, and Peninsula Time turns an early arrival or late departure into a confirmed benefit with 24 hours' notice. Fan Club adds breakfast for two and a $100 dining or spa credit, with upgrade priority at check-in and select properties confirming the upgrade at booking.

From the Mandarin Oriental Fan Club and Peninsula PenClub pages. Benefits vary by property and rate, and exactly what applies is confirmed in writing before you book.

In practice the hotel usually decides it. Peninsula hotels are in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Tokyo, Bangkok, Manila, New York, Chicago, Beverly Hills, London, Paris and Istanbul; where both brands fit your trip, I lay the two side by side for your dates.

Worth knowing

Benefits are confirmed before you book.

Benefits are provided by each program, vary by property and rate, and availability-based items are never guaranteed. Exactly what applies to your stay is confirmed in writing in your proposal, and bookings are made directly with the hotel, so you keep loyalty points and status eligibility where the program allows it.

Questions

Luxury hotel programs, answered.

What do luxury hotel advisor programs include?

Most of the fifteen programs here can include daily breakfast, a property credit, upgrade priority, and early check-in or late check-out, at the hotel's own best available rate. The mix varies by program: Anantara Journeys gives a signature experience instead of a flat credit, the Four Seasons Preferred Partner page lists no property credit but leads with top upgrade priority, and several program pages list no early check-in or late check-out benefit. Benefits vary by property and rate, and exactly what applies is confirmed in writing before you book.

Which hotel programs confirm the upgrade at booking?

Peninsula PenClub and Shangri-La Luxury Circle confirm a one-category upgrade when the booking is made, occasionally limited to certain room categories. Rosewood Elite confirms the upgrade at booking at its properties in Asia and Europe, with priority at check-in elsewhere. Where available, Hyatt Privé confirms a one-category upgrade within 24 hours of booking, and select Four Seasons and Mandarin Oriental properties confirm upgrades at booking. The other programs give upgrade priority at check-in.

Do I pay more than booking direct?

No. You pay the hotel's own best available rate, the same rate you would see booking direct. The benefits are the difference, not the price, and hotel-only bookings carry no planning fee.

Do I keep my hotel points and status?

With Accor Preferred, Anantara Journeys, Hyatt Privé, IHG Destined, Jumeirah Passport to Luxury, Marriott STARS & Luminous and Shangri-La Luxury Circle, your points and status stack with the program's benefits, and Hilton For Luxury stays earn double Honors base points. Fans of M.O. does not incorporate points, and The Peninsula and Rosewood publish no points program for guests, so booking those through an advisor costs you nothing in points. I add your membership number and confirm how it applies before you book.

Can I join these programs myself?

No. They are programs for travel advisors: most belong to a hotel group, SLH WithIN covers Small Luxury Hotels of the World, and Virtuoso is the advisor network for luxury hotels without a program of their own. Several are by invitation, including Mandarin Oriental Fan Club, Hilton For Luxury, Peninsula PenClub, Shangri-La Luxury Circle and Marriott STARS & Luminous. Their benefits reach your stay when the booking is made through a participating advisor, and the reservation is still made with the hotel, at the hotel's own rate.

How do I book a hotel through one of these programs?

Send the hotel or the destination and your dates through Start Here. I match the stay to the right program and confirm the property participates, then book with the hotel through the program's preferred channel, with the benefits that apply confirmed in writing before you commit.
